The ancient Native American Pueblo People cultural group centered in the present-day Four Corners area of the United States, is often referred to in archeology as the Anasazi. The word Anasazi is Navajo for "Ancient Ones" or "Ancient Enemy". The current opinion is that this distinct culture emerged around 1200 B.C., although archeologists still debate the question. The Anasazi recorded their culture and history in the many petroglyphs and pictographs they carved and painted onto the cliffs where they made their home. Much of the art was shamanic.

The shamans went into altered states of consciousness to communicate with the spirit world. The deities or spirits were understood to be both present and amenable, which allowed the shamans, through rituals and incantations, to petition them for help with their mundane problems, like improving the weather or curing illness.

Our own tour of Canyon de Chelly, where there is a proliferation of ancient rock art, was a profound experience and the inspiration for our modern rendition.
