The Mimbres occupied the somewhat isolated mountain and river valleys of southwestern New Mexico from about 100 to 1150 AD. Unlike other ancient cultures, the Mimbres did not leave behind a history of rock art. Information about their culture has been gleaned mostly from pottery discovered in the early part of this century. The pottery is known as "Mimbres Classic black-on-white" though variations in firing can cause the pigments to be brown or red and the clay to be a light gray or buff. Much of the pottery has been found in graves in very fine condition thus leading to speculation that the pots were created solely for burial use. Many Mimbres designs are painted on the inside of bowls approximately ten inches in diameter and five inches high. These bowls were placed upside down on top of the head of the deceased, symbolically creating a view of the world. Animal designs may have been used to indicate the deceased's clan or reference a celestial body, for they saw animal shapes in the stars just as we do. Our "Beetle" design is a collection of the amazing animal images derived from this pottery.
