send this to a friendThe inspiration for this design came from the Kuna, a people indigenous to Panama and Colombia. Kuna women create mola panels made of brightly colored cloth to form the front and back of the blouse they wear as part of their traditional costume. Molas have their origin in body painting. After Spanish colonization and contact with missionaries, mola designs were painted onto fabric rather than skin and then were executed using a reverse applique technique. Layers of different colored cloth are sewn together, then the design is formed by cutting through the layers to reveal the colors below. The cut edges are then sewn down. Molas with many layers and extremely fine stitching are the most prized by collectors. Motifs used in mola designs come from the original geometric patterns from Kuna body painting as well as nature. Because this tradition epitomizes the beauty and craftsmanship of indigenous peoples, we celebrate it in our Molitas design.
