257 Woven Horses
send this to a friendWoven Horses is based on an antique Mexican sarape that had horses woven in with the stripes. A sarape is a colorful garment originally from Mexico. The traditional sarape was created in the Mexican state of Coahuila in north-eastern Mexico near the city of Saltillo. It was an essential item for the vaqueros or cowboys of the ranches of northern Mexico in the 18th and 19th centuries serving as cloak, sleeping blanket or saddle padding as needed. During the Mexican War of Independence from Spain from 1810 to 1821, the vaquero was idealized as a hero and became a symbol for Mexican independence. Historically, sarapes were also worn by the Navajo as the Mexican cattle culture migrated North during the 19th century.
The design motifs in our print celebrate traditional sarapes and their unique place in the fashions and furnishings of the Southwest.
