Welcome To Sabaku
Sabaku is the Japanese word for desert. When my husband, John and I came upon this word, we thought it perfect to name the company we founded in 1987. The Sonoran Desert is home to Sabaku Artwear.
About The Artist
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Nancy still lives and works there. She started her studies in art at an early age working in ceramics and weaving and continued working toward a degree in fine arts at the University of Arizona where she studied painting, sculpture and art history.
Nancy’s work reflects her love for the plants and animals of the surrounding Sonoran Desert, the vibrant folk art of Mexico and Latin America and the patterns in Native American craft. By creating wearable art, she hopes to not only pay homage to these inspirations, but to share an understanding of the inhabitants and traditions of the desert Southwest.
About Our Shirts
We would like to share with you the story of how your shirt became Sabaku Artwear. Our women’s tops have made a long journey before they reach you.
It all begins at a California mill where our 100% cotton fabrics are knit just for us to our specifications. The fabric travels in 1000 yard rolls to our manufacturer in San Gabriel, California. Each roll is tested for shrinkage and our shirt patterns are adjusted accordingly. The fabric is spread in many layers on long cutting tables, patterns are attached and shirt pieces are cut.
