The festivals of Oaxaca, Mexico commemorate the lives of saints and the Virgin of Guadalupe by reenacting their stories in dance and procession. This design mimics a huipil or blouse embroidered with a floral motif worn during festivals in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The dances and ritual reenactments vivify the victories of the saints and renew the community’s bonds with each other and faith in their higher power. Translating a traditional Mexican Tehuana dress into the silk-screening process, Huipil, celebrates a subtle aspect of a living indigenous culture.
