A Mayan legend says the first two hummingbirds were created from the small feather scraps left over from the construction of other birds. The gods were so pleased an elaborate wedding ceremony was held for them. Butterflies marked the place, then flower petals fell on the ground to make a carpet; spiders spun webs to make a bridal pathway, then the sun sent down rays which caused the tiny groom to glow with dazzling reds and greens.  Whenever he turned away from the sun, his feathers became drab again as the gray feathers from which he was made.

The hummingbird symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. This fascinating bird is capable amazing feats despite its small size, such as traveling great distances and being able to fly backwards. Thus, the hummingbird is also a symbol of adaptability and resiliency. They are messengers of peace, they heal the body and soul and they act as a guide through life’s challenges. They are the embodiment of wonder and beauty.
